• 1943 Allied troop ship, USAT Dorchester was torpedoed and sunk by a German sub. Four Chaplains, as the vessel sank, calmed the frightened soldiers and sailors, aided in the evacuation of the ship, and helped guide wounded men to safety. They also gave up their own life vests and died as a result. The ship sank in about 20 minutes, taking 675 men with her out of an on-board total of 904.
