Now this is news to me. Until I heard this on the show, I had no idea Barack Obama was a smoker. This may seem like no big deal to some people but this news really changes my perception of him as a viable Presidential candidate. Prior to this news, I really had nothing negative to say about the guy. He’s a well spoken and well educated man in America. Good for him. I was willing to look past his lack of political experience, but this is a big deal for me. Why? Quite simply I have a hard time voting for someone who smokes cigarettes. It shows poor poor judgment and it makes me think what kind of judgment will he have a on the really important issues of the country?
And what about the perception he will portray to the youth of this country? That’s a great positive example. Look at me, I’m president and I smoke. I’ve heard some people say that this will help him appear to be more of a “regular guy”, more like the common American. Maybe that’s true but I think he’s hurting his chances as long as keeps smoking.
So the main point of this article is can a candidate become President if they smoke. In today’s day and age, I don’t think so. There was a time when smoking was glamorized in film and television. If you ever watch old Dick Cavett shows or any of the classic movie tough guys from the 40s and 50s, smoking was almost in every scene. It was accepted then, but isn’t now.
Stop smoking Obama and show how strong and smart you really are. Or keep smoking and die an early death.
