You can read Daniel’s 10 March Tampa Tribune column on this subject on my Tribune Archive page.
Herbert in Tampa called in today to discuss the Couey trial and his apparent act during the trial to look like he is mentally retarded. Herbet asked how do we know he isn’t retarded. Daniel’s response was how do we know he is? There was never any history of this throughout Couey’s life and then all of a sudden once the trial begins, now he’s coloring with crayons in the courtroom.
Daniel said he got and will get exactly what he deserves. The primary problem Daniel had with the trial was the news that Couey was not given a lawyer during his Savanna interrogation even though he asked for one.
Couey is a very sick individual and the Florida death penalty was established just for people like him. It’s unfortunate that we’ll now have to wait for years of appeals before he’s finally put to death.
